How to Know If Someone Read Your Email in Gmail (Free, No Extension)

By Anirudh Agarwal · Updated 10 August 2026

You sent the cold email to the recruiter three days ago. Nothing. Now you are stuck on the worst question in the job hunt: did they even open it, or is it sitting unread at the bottom of an inbox? Knowing the answer changes what you do next. If they opened it and went quiet, you follow up. If they never opened it, you resend with a better subject line or try a different person. Guessing wastes both.

Here is how to actually tell if someone read your email in Gmail, what works, what does not, and the free way to do it without installing anything.

First, the honest truth about Gmail's built-in read receipts

Gmail does have a read receipt feature, but for most students it is useless:

  • It only works on Google Workspace accounts, the paid business version. If your address ends in @gmail.com, you do not have it at all.
  • The recipient has to approve it. When they open your email, Gmail asks them whether to send a receipt back. Plenty of people click no.
  • It is desktop only. If they read your email on the Gmail phone app, you learn nothing.

So the built-in option is out for almost everyone doing an off-campus job hunt from a personal Gmail. You need email tracking instead.

The three real ways to know if your email was read

1. Gmail's built-in read receipt. Covered above. Workspace only, needs approval, desktop only. Skip it unless your college gives you a Workspace account and you are emailing another Workspace user.

2. A Chrome extension like the well-known email trackers. These work, but they ask you to install a browser add-on and grant it access to your Gmail. That is a lot of permission to hand over just to see opens, and it only works on the one browser where you installed it.

3. A free email tracker that needs no extension. This is the simplest option. You write your email in a tracker, it adds an invisible marker, you paste it into Gmail and send. When the recipient opens it, the tracker records it and shows you the time, how many times they reopened it, and often the device. No install, works on personal Gmail, and the recipient never gets a prompt to approve anything. This is exactly what our free email tracker does, and it is what the rest of this guide will walk through.

How email tracking actually works

Every tracked email carries one tiny, invisible image, a single transparent pixel. When the recipient opens your email, their mail app loads that image from the tracker's server. That load is the signal: it tells the tracker your email was opened, when, and sometimes on what device and from which city. The recipient sees a completely normal email. There is nothing to click and nothing to approve.

This is the same method every major email tracker uses. It is not perfect (some apps preload images, a few block them), but it is by far the most practical way to know if your email was read, and it is the only method that works reliably on a personal Gmail account.

Why this matters for cold emails and job applications

For a student chasing off-campus roles, an open is a signal you can act on:

  • Opened, then silence for a few days? They saw it and got busy. A short, polite follow-up is exactly what turns a non-reply into a reply. You are nudging someone who already showed interest, not cold-emailing a stranger again.
  • Opened five times? Someone is genuinely considering you, maybe forwarding it internally. That is your cue to be ready and responsive.
  • Never opened after two days? The problem is your subject line or the wrong contact, not your pitch. Resend with a sharper subject, or find another person at the company.

Without tracking, all three look identical: silence. With it, each one has a different next move. Pair this with a real job application tracker so every email, open, and follow-up lives in one place, and a set of proven cold email templates so the emails are worth opening in the first place.

How to track your emails free, in about 30 seconds

  1. Open the free email tracker and sign in with Google. It is free, with no credit card and no extension.
  2. Write your email in the box. Click Create and copy tracked email. Only the body is copied, with the invisible marker attached.
  3. In Gmail, click Compose, type your subject line, and paste the body. Send it as normal.
  4. Watch your dashboard. The moment the recipient opens it, you will see when, how many times, and the device.

That is the whole thing. No settings, no permissions, no waiting on the recipient to approve a receipt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tell if someone read my email without them knowing? Yes. A tracked email carries an invisible pixel, so the recipient just sees a normal message with nothing to approve or click. You see the open on your dashboard.

Do Gmail read receipts work on a personal @gmail.com account? No. Built-in read receipts are a Google Workspace (paid business) feature, they need the recipient to approve, and they only work on desktop. For a personal Gmail you need an email tracker instead.

Is there a genuinely free email tracker? Yes. Our email tracker is free and unlimited, with no credit card, and unlike most tools it needs no Chrome extension.

Can I see how many times my email was opened? Yes. A good tracker shows both the first open and every reopen after it, which tells you how much attention your email is really getting.

Does an email tracker work without a Chrome extension? Ours does. You compose in the tracker, copy the email, and paste it into Gmail. There is nothing to install and it works in any browser.
